I signalled the others to press back and hide. The Rookie tried to angle his head out of the way, but the rebels holding his arms had him in a vicious grip. The scale is kept small, the focus is always set on the characters. It splintered under his weight. This has, naturally, been a go-to quote for some of the characters that the community myself included has largely deemed to have mishandled. But there is something of a divide as to whether or not the Rookie is included as part of that roster.
There are those who do not like that New Blood killed him, be it the way in which it happened or the very concept of killing him off; whereas others see this as how to do a shocking death right. As the title of this article rather blatantly suggests, I strongly fall into the latter camp. The thing about the Rookie is that he was purposefully constructed by Bungie as a non -character. Back when what would go on to become Halo 3: ODST was in its earliest stages, Bungie considered a number of different concepts and characters, one of which involved going back to play as the Arbiter again.
This idea, however, was passed on because it came with a lot of baggage in terms of backstory when Bungie wanted something fresh. There was a lot of back-fiction that we had to bring along with us, there was a lot of making sure we got everything right, and we just wanted to start fresh. The Rookie exists as a narrative framing device for Halo 3: ODST , a means for the player to become immersed in exploring the neon-lit city of New Mombasa, searching for clues that will lead you back to your squad.
I conduct extensive research to write these articles, and so I actively searched out whatever I could find where Bungie talked about what kind of character they were aiming to craft with the Rookie. Here are a few choice quotes that capture the gist, from when the game was first announced as Halo 3: Recon in …. And a big part of it is the character.
So even beyond just the health and things like that, it plays very much like Halo but plays a lot more human I guess. As such, ODST suffers from a severe case of ludonarrative dissonance, which refers to the relationship between the narrative told in the story versus the gameplay.
The dissonance refers to when mechanics or gameplay elements betray the story that the game is trying to tell. The narrative intention to follow a more vulnerable human character conflicts with the gameplay, as you are still able to walk at full speed — faster , even, than the Chief — while carrying a detached turret.
Bred for combat, built for war, you are the master of any weapon, pilot of any vehicle… and fear no enemy. It turns out that the ODSTs are still the master of any weapon, pilot of any vehicle, and not given any reason to fear their enemies. People naturally and understandably started to build an idea of the Rookie that ran contrary to the narrative intention.
This was the lovechild of a much smaller team working with an existing and aged engine, and it was not originally intended to be more than a campaign DLC.
In a death that is as simple and mundane as being shot in the head, New Blood , truthfully, fulfils the attempt at gritty realism that ODST aspired to capture but never quite managed to grasp. Firstly, the idea of there being some sort of structural hierarchy of importance to this character simply because we played as him in a game is entirely false. For a more in-depth exploration of that, I have that covered in my character study articles on the Master Chief in Halo 1 , Halo 2 , Halo 3 , and Halo 4 I suppose I ought to do Halo 5 at some point.
No, the Rookie represents a far simpler, more unified vision of a character than one could ever cobble together for the Master Chief. As a result of that vision, there was simply less that could be done with him.
Just weeks after the tragedy of New Jerusalem, [The Rookie] dropped near the city of Mount Haven with orders to defend the transport of a Forerunner artifact.
The injured soldier warned the Rookie of his intention to detonate a nuclear missile to destroy both the rogue ODSTs and Covenant forces approaching the crash site. The Rookie escaped the blast zone and hailed a Pelican for pickup. There is no importance placed on who this listener is. Blood Line in particular is worth venerating as one of the best Halo comics; the five-issue run was a confluence of great storytelling and some of the best art credit to Francis Portela there for pencils, inks, and colours in the series.
It was brimming with imaginative potential. Much of that potential came from the Spartans, who had a unique and interesting history that made them, in a lot of ways, some of my favourite Spartan-II characters.
I would compare them more to Resistance or British S. Hit the Covenant where they live, hit them hard, hit them fast, then disappear before they know what the hell did hit them. Mendez was informed of this by a jealous Victor, who then sent Red Team after them. Margaret got run down and she lost her left eye in the ensuing struggle.
The incident was never again spoken of, but the team was more prone to in-fighting which becomes a significant conflict later on. Black Team are or were known to communicate to each other with half-finished in-jokes that nobody but them understand or understood , and general military slang. Victor is described as being unnaturally calm and he disturbs his teammates with his voice because it never changes in tone — a character trait which came to be be tested in Blood Line , as he completely loses his composure on the Line Installation.
After deducing the events of the previous six hours, the Rookie picked up a message from Dare, requesting assistance in the New Mombasa Data Center. Upon reaching the Underground, the Rookie learned she was on Sublevel After reaching a Data Stack, he ran into a NMPD Officer attempting to check on his men; however, the Superintendent wouldn't let the officer onto the next level until the Rookie arrived at his location.
The two fought their way through Covenant forces and reached the Data Stack to the next level, though the officer was either killed by Yanme'e or by the Rookie in self-defense depending on whether or not all Audio Logs have been collected.
After fighting through more Covenant, the Rookie finally arrived at Dare's location, where she told him of her mission: to retrieve the data the Superintendent recorded during the Prophet of Regret's attack on the city. Dare and the Rookie were forced to fight their way through an entire Drone hive, as well as other assorted Covenant.
They found a Huragok holding the Superintendent's data. After some hesitation, the Rookie then assisted Dare with protecting Vergil after she told him the alien could be vital to defeating the Covenant. If the player has collected all the Audio Logs, it is Dare who is hesitant and the Rookie who gets her to stand down, whistling to befriend Vergil.
After fighting past a Covenant outpost and up another elevator , the four arrived at the Coastal Highway. While driving down the highway, they witnessed the Covenant Loyalist fleet arriving in force, and starting to glass the city.
After encountering a Scarab , Buck decided to find a new location and hold position until Mickey and the rest of the ODST squad arrived with a stolen Phantom.
Once he did, the squad evacuated the city and watched as the Covenant glassed New Mombasa. A month later, the Rookie was seen with his squad, sleeping while everyone else watched Sgt. Johnson's interrogation of Vergil.
The team had been able to reach the colony's capital building, where the rebels had barricaded themselves, but were lured into the legislative room and trapped in a killzone. Sergeant Buck sent the Rookie towards the only way out of the room, an emergency exit, while the rest of Alpha Nine covered him, but the Rookie was unable to fight his way past the Insurrectionist forces to rescue his companions, instead was wounded in a shoulder and taken prisoner by the insurrectionists, being brought into a presidential address booth which had one way shielding to protect it's inhabitants as a hostage.
After a brief but tense discussion between Sergeant Buck and the leader of the Insurrectionists, Captain Ingridson , during which the Rookie was shot in the knee, parts of Alpha Nine were able to flank around the presidential address booth. However as they breached the booth, Mickey hesitated to shoot, and Ingridson realized her attempt at escape had failed, and shot the Rookie through the head as a final act of revenge. Ingridson was killed seconds after the Rookie's death, and the insurrectionists were all killed or captured shortly.
As the Rookie didn't have any known friends or family outside of his squad, his burial at sea over the waters of Draco was attended only by the other members of Alpha-Nine. The Rookie's death had long standing consequences: Romeo blamed Mickey for his death, and the group's harmony was lost.
The guilt made Mickey easily recruited by a group of Insurrectionists, betraying his two mates, but he failed and was captured. Halo Alpha Explore. Getting Started. No recent wiki edits to this page. At the last moment before beginning the drop, ONI operative Dare took control over Buck 's squad, to use them for a classified mission.
The Rookie himself, however did not hear this because he was asleep at the time. He was informed of the change in mission when Buck alerted the team to an emergency debrief. As Buck's squad was dropping toward the covenant ship, Dare changed the team's course so that they would land close to ONI Alpha Base instead. Moments before they were going to hit the ground the Covenant ship went into slipspace, generating a massive shock wave and an EMP blast, scattering all of the pods across the city.
Rookie's pod, in particular, smashed into Mickey 's pod, cracking the pod's window and throwing the Rookie into free fall. The Rookie was knocked unconscious, only to awaken six hours later.
The Superintendent , the municipal AI of New Mombasa, helpfully uploaded a map of the streets to his VISR database, and lighted the way so that he could get through the city safely. As the Rookie explored the city more and more, he tried to piece together clues to figure out what happened to his squad mates while he was unconscious, avoiding and engaging Covenant patrols all the while.
With each 'beacon' he located, the Superintendent would show him some security footage showing a piece of the puzzle, helping him track his squadmates. The Rookie eventually found all the beacons left by his squad and discovered they had escaped New Mombasa without him. However, he then receives a distress call from Dare, requesting assistance in the city's underground catacombs.
After narrowly escaping a Covenant ambush, he arrives in the underground and comes across an N. Q officer who was left stranded in the catacombs too. They team up and navigate through the tunnels. At this point, one of two things will happen.
